Phenotypes

What are Phenotypes?

Phenotypes are the base unit of expression. They are the observable expressions of things unseen. In nature they are the unique observable traits we can see in our ecosystem such as the color patterns on a butterfly, a squid, or a fish. Phenotypes are natures form of expression to communicate: Don't eat me, I am a mate, or to blend in

Biological Phenotype

Phenotype's in Nature

In nature, expression can be understood as communication, signaled through colors, shapes, patterns, and noises. Think of an insect that is bright yellow, it may be saying "don't eat me," or a bird that is blue this time of year may be expressing I am ready for a mate. It can be understood then that natures form of expression are biological Phenotypes.

Cognitive Phenotype

Phenotype of the Mind

Similar to biological expression, humans use their mind to express. This may be in the form of poetry, film, art, music, or ideas. We call this process creation. In order for the human to express something there is some level of cognitive processing required to do so. After this phase the observable creation can be understood as a Phenotype of the mind. It is a physical, observable expression of all that thinking.

Phenotyping

Phenotype of the Mind

Phenotyping is the first co-authoring design process where we capture the very essence of who someone is. Their raw expression or thought form. We refer to these assets as Phenotype's. Phenotype's are like patterns of identity and can be applied to different mediums as you so choose. In an effort to bridge the gap between expression and expressor. You become the statement, not the trend.
